01 OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the project VIETOS is to encourage renewal of empty and lifeless public spaces in Lazdynai mikrorayon while involving the local community.
If the project is successful in Lazdynai, it will eventually involve other post-soviet districts that have similar problems.
02 TASKS
The objective of the first stage is to identify the main problems to be found in the public spaces of Lazdynai. The VIETOS.org team met eye to eye with local residents and talked about life in Lazdynai, issues with the surrounding urban environment and possible solutions. Based on the information gathered during these talks, an online survey was set up to quantify popular opinion and determine the locations of specific problems. The results of the survey could provide a serious basis for various proposals presented for consideration to the local government. The second stage of the project is about generating and sharing (serious and not so serious) visions and ideas for the public spaces. This should activate communication between residents, local government and architects, also act as an incentive to the residents of Lazdynai to come up with ideas of their own. Hopefully, this will encourage the locals to be less passive and ignite in them an urge to be involved in

03 SUBJECTS
The subject of project VIETOS.org is empty and lifeless public spaces in Lazdynai. There are three relevant categories of subjects: The Underpass
The underground walkway is a gloomy transitional space that houses a strip of periodically functioning kiosks. Pedestrian paths
The main pedestrian paths in the area serve the sole purpose of transitional passageways for the local residents. As envisioned by urban planners of the Soviet era, the pathways were meant to be an idyllic recreational zone. But such visions were not fulfilled - the walkways never found their true role in the context of the district. Gardens
Every block has its own green area. Usually it is full of dense shrubs. These areas do not belong to the block resdients or the public space. For this reason no one wants to look after them.
